March 26, 2020
Yuichi Hasebe
President, Yokohama National University
Dear New and Current YNU Students
In light of the spread of the novel coronavirus, we have decided to postpone the start date of the Spring 2020 semester to May 7. It was a hard decision to make when we think of our new students looking forward to campus life at our university as well as our current students with a determination to work hard in the coming semester. However, we at Yokohama National University give the first priority to providing quality education in a safe and secure environment to support your visions and desires, and to progress together. We would appreciate your kind understanding and cooperation on this matter.
We plan to start administrative programs and procedures for the new semester on April 1, but on a smaller scale and a gradual basis to minimize infection risks. These include orientations for new students, where we will distribute a student ID card, English placement tests, orientations for each grade, and course registration.

Until the start of classes, you are expected to take good care of your health in accordance with the report “Measures against the Infection Spread of the Novel Coronavirus” available on our website and other relevant information and to spend a meaningful time as a student, preparing for classes with reference to the syllabuses and other materials. If you have a plan to go abroad, think twice given the global outbreak of the coronavirus, no matter the destination. You should postpone the plan if possible at all.
We are currently reviewing how classes should be implemented with a view to lowering the risk of the spread. Once the review is complete, announcement will be made on our website.
Even if you are infected by the coronavirus, most of you may not develop symptoms and may transmit it to others while you are unaware. We strongly ask you to ensure that this will not happen, behaving in a responsible manner as a student of our university and as a member of society, and dealing with and responding to information in a calm and rational manner. If you have any question or concern about your school life or academic matters, please contact the office of undergraduate/graduate school which you belong (Contact: /english/contact/).
