Policy for Fall Semester Classes
- Classes will be held online as a general rule -

Dear YNU Students and Faculty Members

July 28, 2020
Yuichi Hasebe
President, Yokohama National University

The nation-wide state of emergency for preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus disease was lifted on May 25, followed by the lifting of restrictions on movement across prefectures on June 19. Although the outbreak seemed to be under control for a while, soon the number of infections surged in the Tokyo metropolitan area and “Kanagawa Alert” was issued on July 17 in Kanagawa Prefecture, and now a number of municipalities across Japan are reporting the largest number of infections than ever before. We must say that the spread of novel coronavirus is still in a serious phase.

In light of this serious situation, and putting the safety of students, faculty and staff first, Yokohama National University has decided to continue its policy of holding all classes online as a general rule, for the coming fall semester starting on October 5. As an exception, however, some of the mandatory classes (such as lab experiment classes) required for graduation/degree completion may be held in an in-person setting, provided that maximum measures are taken to prevent the spread of infection. The details will be notified through each college or graduate school. Please check the relevant pages on our website.

As a national university, we consider it to be our primary responsibility to provide high-quality education in a safe and secure environment. At the same time, we also assume a huge responsibility toward society as a whole. Based on these responsibilities, we have considered the situation over and over again and came to the above conclusion to hold classes online, in light of the ongoing pandemic that looks to persist for a while and from the viewpoint of preventing further spread of the disease.

Our experience of holding online classes throughout the spring semester has revealed various challenges pertaining to online education. Learning from that experience and improving the way we provide online classes, faculty and staff members will work together to support your learning. We hope you students will take care of your health, both physically and mentally, and cooperate with us in the fall semester classes. We are living in a difficult time, but we can learn from hardships. Through this experience, we hope to seek new ways of learning and researching in pursuit of a better society.

Last but not least, one of the most important issues revealed through the spring semester was the issue of student health. We are worried that, as an array of restrictions and inconvenience continue to burden you students, you may be experiencing uncomfortableness, anxiety and stress, and perhaps some of you don’t even have enough strength left to seek help.
If you are having any mental or physical health problems or experiencing troubles of any kind, please contact the various contact windows listed on the webpage below or the academic affairs office of your affiliated college or graduate school. Seeking consultation and addressing the problem at an early stage is the fastest way to get things better. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
