Discover KABUKI - KABUKI Appreciation Class for Foreigners
Program：”Nihon Furisode Hajime – Yamata no Orochi to Susanoo-no Mikoto -" by Monzaemon Chikamatsu

On Friday, June 23, 2023, YNU international students attended "Discover KABUKI – An experience for international audiences and beginners – " held at the National Theatre as part of the "Cross-Cultural Experience Program" supported by the YNU Alumni Association “Koyukai”.
The first part of the program, "Explanation: How to watch Kabuki" featured a commentary by actor Toranosuke Nakamura. He introduced the characters, the general content of the story, the characteristics of kabuki, and the background of the performance, as well as carefully explaining concepts such as “hanamichi”.
In the second part, "Nihon Furisode Hajime – Yamata no Orochi to Susanoo-no Mikoto -" written by Monzaemon Chikamatsu in 1718 based on the legends in "Kojiki" and "Nihonshoki" was performed. A beautiful girl, Princess Inada, is offered up as a sacrifice to prevent the haunting of the eight-headed serpent that lives in Izumo Province from coming to haunt the village. Susanoo-no-Mikoto fiercely fights against the eight-headed serpent to save Princes Inada who was swallowed up by the serpent. The performance was full of the glamorous and dynamic charm of Kabuki, including the dynamic “tachimawari”, and the powerful musical performance further enlivened the stage.
Many of the participating international students commented on their impressions, saying, “I had heard that Kabuki is difficult, but thanks to the very detailed explanation by the director, I was able to enjoy watching it", "I have known Kabuki before, but seeing it in person was very interesting and different from what I had imagined", "I was impressed by the expressiveness and unique artistry of the actors", "It was a very unforgettable experience for me to have the opportunity to experience the charm of Japanese traditional culture at the National Theatre, which has been in existence for decades." It was an inspiring and valuable opportunity for them to experience a wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.
